TROY, MI - Michelle Colonna became Michigan's first recipient of the newly created Spirit of the Heart Award at Michigan's 2002 Award Banquet in November. The award was created this season for non-competetive skaters who demonstrate exceptional dedication and love for the sport in spite of any special considerations of their own which might prevent or discourage them from becoming active skaters.

Michelle was born with Cerebral Palsy and not even expected to be able to walk. But with the love and support of a strong mother and caring grandmother, she not only walked but became a regular participant in the Learn-to-Skate Program at SkateWorld. She learned to skate forward, backward and monkey jump in spite of her handicap. One year ago, she realised that her then misformed body would not allow her to do many of the skating maneuvers needed to get to her REAL goal of joining the team as a competitive figure skating member. Her family took her for special state-of-the-arts surgery which rebuilt her feet legs and hips, aligning them and straightening them... and leaving her in a full body cast for several months. She now does many hours per day of physical therapy to learn to use her new limbs. The straightening process added 3 shoe sizes and about 4 inches of height. But most important to Michelle is the possibility that she can learn to do more things on skates.

Michelle, shown on the right with fellow team members and coach (and with new skates donated by a Skate World adult skater) , stands tall and proud to be Skate World's newest club member. Her surgeon and physical therapist have recently agreed to include one private skating lesson per week (and of course Learn-to-Skate) as part of her physical therapy program. Her lesson goal is to eventually develop the balance needed for the #1 circle figure test.
GREAT LAKES,USA - At many events, the tabulators must search for the USARS event list and numbers during the meet. For those of involved in tabulating or entering meet info, it is now possible to have the events and codes info available right on the computer screen while entering data and tabulating.

JoeD202902@aol.com decided to put together a little computer program with the event list and numbers for Standard and JO. It's small and doesn't take up much footprint on the screen so it can be left up on the computer along with the tabulation software. If you right-click on either list, you will see more options, but don't mess with the source code view. If you do, you could crash the program.

The program should run on almost any Windows-based system from Win 95 on up. It requires at least Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher.

Just download the program to your favorite location (JoeD202902@aol.com recommends putting it in the same folder as your tabulation program) and then using the <Start> <Run> feature in Windows (or Win Explorer) to launch it. Those of you with more savvy can create a shortcut to your desktop after you have successfully launched the program(that's one of the features of the right-click on the list thing).

If you know of anyone else who might benefit, please pass on information about this program to them - it's FREEE! Contact JoeD202902@aol.com for information or for a copy of the program.

Visit his Roller Figure Skating Resource Site... a great resource for roller figure skating.  You will find even more files and other utilities that can be useful in putting together and running roller figure skating meets.

The Riverside Artistic Team in Livonia Michigan works to gain community visibility for their club and their skaters. Recently Sarah Baldwin, Junior World Class Pan Am Games Figure Champion, was featured in the sports section of Michigan's largest news publication. Their fundraising efforts include well-promoted casino and bowling events held prior to Regionals open to friends, family and the general public. If you participate in their Michigan Interclub Meet, look at the size of the program book. It is thick and interesting due to the corporate, business and individual ad sales efforts of all club members. Few restaurants and businesses in Livonia, MI haven't been touched by this club and its efforts for USA Roller Sports.
